Children and Dental Emergencies: What Parents Should Know

toothless grin childAs a parent, you prepare for all kinds of emergencies – but what about dental emergencies? Being prepared can make all the difference when it comes to your child’s oral health. From dealing with a knocked-out tooth to a bitten lip, knowing how to respond can help save your child’s smile.

Common Dental Emergencies in Children

Here are some situations we see:

  • Knocked-Out Tooth – if your child’s tooth is knocked out, stay calm. Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently without scrubbing and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s impossible, keep it in milk or saliva and get to our clinic immediately.
  • Chipped or Broken Tooth – rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any tooth fragments and head to our dentist.
  • Bitten Lip or Tongue – clean the area gently and apply a cold compress to minimise swelling. If bleeding doesn’t stop after 15 minutes, visit the emergency room.
  • Toothache – have your child rinse with warm saltwater. Use dental floss to remove any trapped food. If the pain persists, contact our dentist.
  • Object Stuck Between Teeth – try to gently remove it with dental floss. Never use sharp objects. If unsuccessful, call our practice.

How to Prevent Sports-Related Dental Injuries

The most common dental injuries in sports are lip lacerations and chipped teeth. At Green Apple Dental Clinic, we believe prevention is key, so we offer custom mouthguards to protect your child’s smile.

Unlike one-size-fits-all store-bought options, our mouthguards are tailored to your child’s unique dentition. Using advanced technology, we create a perfect fit that offers

  • Superior protection against impacts
  • Enhanced comfort for longer wear
  • Better breathing and communication
  • Easy hydration without removal

Plus, as your child grows, we can adjust their mouthguard to accommodate their changing teeth to ensure consistent protection throughout their athletic journey.

Always Be Prepared and Stay Calm

Dental emergencies can be scary, but being prepared makes all the difference. Keep our number handy, have a dental first-aid kit and consider a custom mouthguard for sports.
